Gasoline or diesel then flows freely until an automatic vacuum sensor detects the tank is full and shuts the nozzle off.

Start by removing the nozzle from the pump. It should have a loose, rubber bellow around the spout end. This expands to seal against different fill pipe diameters and capture vapors during refueling.
With your gas cap off, insert the nozzle fully into the fill pipe. You may need to jiggle it slightly to get it aligned and pushed all the way in. The bellow should seal snugly against the pipe rim.
Once inserted, you should hear or feel the nozzle’s latch engage, securing it in place. You can attempt to pull it back out – if latched, it should be locked in position. If it pulls out freely, re-insert and make sure it properly latches.
With the nozzle latched in, simply squeeze the main trigger lever to begin the flow of fuel. The nozzle will automatically stop on its own when the tank is full – no more holding down that rigid old lever!
As the tank fills, gasoline rises in your fill pipe until it makes contact with the nozzle’s vacuum sensor tip. This break in the vacuum triggers the automatic shut-off mechanism to immediately stop flow, preventing overflow.
On rare occasions, an auto-stop nozzle may fail to shut off for various reasons. Debris in the fill pipe could be blocking the sensor, or the nozzle components may be faulty.
Whatever the reason, never let your tank overflow! If fuel continues to flow despite the tank being full, immediately let off the trigger lever and contact the station attendant. They’ll be able to reset or replace the nozzle as needed.
Avoid removing an auto-stop nozzle from the fill pipe until it has finished and the flow stops. This prevents an unnecessary mess or safety hazard before you’re able to cap off the tank.
