The mechanical valve works in two ways. First, when a dispenser is hit, the anchored bottom half shears and separates from the top half. This breaks the fusible link, causing the spring-loaded poppet or disc to close and stop all fuel flow until repairs are made.
Meanwhile, some shear valves include a secondary poppet in the top half. When the valve shears, this poppet also closes, preventing product from leaking inside the dispenser cabinet.

Therefore, a broken pipe without a shut-off valve creates a continuous fuel source for fires. The shear valve eliminates this fuel source within milliseconds of an accident.
