  • Protect it from contamination: Dirt, water, or fuel will compromise DEF/AdBlue quickly. Use only sealed dispensing systems or approved containers. 
  • Avoid unnecessary exposure: Do not leave canisters or drums outside unprotected. Keep them shaded, dry, and away from any direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. 

How to Safely Use DEF/AdBlue During Cold Weather?

Do not apply external heat sources (including space heaters or open flames) to soften frozen DEF/AdBlue. Let it naturally warm or rely on heated storage. 

  • Always use the proper dispensing equipment to avoid contamination.
  • Check levels as early as possible in winter because slow flow or freezing can mask low stock. 
  • Inspect pipework and pumps for frost damage, leaks, or stiff components. 

Essential Maintenance for Winter Readiness 

Preparation must begin before the first freeze occurs. Inspecting the insulation and heating systems is a primary task for fuel dispenser maintenance.

It is recommended to check all heat traces and thermostat settings. Heat traces are electric cables that wrap around pipes to keep the fluid warm. If a single segment of cable fails, the entire line can freeze and block the flow.

Also, check the seals on the dispenser cabinet for gaps or cracks, as cold wind entering the cabinet can drop the temperature below the freezing point. Replace worn weather stripping to keep the internal heaters effective.

Protecting the Pump and Internal Components 

The DEF/AdBlue fuel dispenser is the most vulnerable part of the system. If the pump contains fluid during a hard freeze, the internal vanes may unfortunately seize. Some systems use a purge cycle to blow fluid back into the tank after use. Test this cycle to ensure no liquid remains in the delivery hose because a frozen hose is fragile and will surely crack if moved or coiled.

Inspect the suction lines for any water entry, as this liquid is heavier than diesel and settles at the bottom of the lines. In a diesel fuel dispenser, this water can freeze and block the fuel flow entirely.

Managing Nozzles and Hoses in the Cold 

Nozzles have small internal chambers and sensing ports for shut-off, which are easily blocked by even a tiny amount of ice. That is why hoses should be kept in heated holsters when not in use to keep the nozzle tip warm and prevent ice from forming. 

If a nozzle does freeze, do not use a torch or open flame to thaw it, as the plastic components inside will melt or warp. Instead, use a heat gun or warm water to gently melt the ice blockages. 

Monitoring Fluid Concentration 

The freezing point of AdBlue depends on the correct ratio of urea to water. If the water evaporates or if there is a change in concentration, the freezing point rises. Use a refractometer to check the urea concentration during fuel dispenser maintenance. If the concentration is off, the fluid can freeze at higher temperatures than expected.
