A fuel nozzle’s main function is to dispense fuel from its container to another in order for it to be transported elsewhere or used by someone else. 

By this, without proper maintenance can lead to shutting off prematurely, which disrupts the overall fueling process. This issue is typically called “lock-up” or frequent clicking, which prevents fuel dispensers from delivering a steady stream of liquid. 

Understanding the mechanical triggers for shut-off is the primary step in troubleshooting. Most issues involve the venturi sensing system or back-pressure issues. This guide focuses on technical fixes of the dispensers to help you restore normal operation of the equipment.

Understanding the Fuel Nozzle’s Working Mechanism 

The fuel nozzle works through two separate pumps, one for gasoline and nozzle for diesel fuel. These pumps are on either side of the nozzle, with each one attached to a metal or plastic tube. 

The metal tube is inserted into the gas tank, while the plastic one connects to the fuel tank of your vehicle. Pressing the nozzle handle activates a lever that releases fuel. Gasoline flows through a metal tube, while diesel passes through a plastic tube to prevent contamination from other fuels.

Steps in Fuel Nozzle Repair 

Inspect the Venturi Port and Sensing Tube

The venturi port is the automatic shut-off that relies on a small hole near the nozzle tip. It senses when fuel reaches the spout to prevent overflows. Unfortunately, if this port is blocked by ice or dirt, the nozzle clicking off will happen consistently. 

With this, use a soft brush or compressed air to clear out any debris. Do not stick metal wires into the port, as they might damage the internal diaphragm. A regular cleaning of the sprout also prevents sensing errors, ensuring the sensing tube inside the spout is not damaged. A bent or cracked tube causes air leaks that trigger the shut-off mechanism incorrectly. 

Check for Back-Pressure Issues

High-flow speed may cause fuel to splash back toward the nozzle, triggering the sensor even if the tank is empty. This is a common problem with high-volume fuel dispensers. 

Check if the vehicle’s fuel tank vent is clear because a clogged tank vent makes air pressure that pushes fuel back up the filler neck. Try also minimizing the flow rate by holding the lever at a lower notch.

Furthermore, inspect the internal check valve of the nozzle for smooth movement. A stiff check valve makes turbulence inside the nozzle body that can falsely trigger the vacuum diaphragm. 

Evaluate the Internal Diaphragm’s Condition

The diaphragm is a flexible rubber part that regulates the shut-off lever. Over time, fuel additives can cause the rubber to stiffen or tear. If the diaphragm is ruptured, the nozzle will lock up and refuse to stay open. Replace the diaphragm assembly using a compatible repair kit.

Step-by-Step Process to Proper Maintenance 

Follow this step-by-step guide to fuel nozzle’s proper maintenance: 

  • Disconnect and remove the fuel hose from the pump.
  • Secure the nozzle firmly so it won’t move.
  • Clean inside the nozzle with a rag; use alcohol or benzene if needed.
  • Blow out remaining dirt with compressed air.
  • If unused for 30+ days, flush fuel through it slowly before reassembly.
